Holland in Haymarket - Festival of Spring

Juggling a hectic schedule on weekdays can drain you. My family and I decided it was time to slow down over the weekend and head outdoors to explore the "Holland in Haymarket - Festival of Spring”. With overcast skies and a sudden drop in temps, we went ahead with our plans anyway as we are big fans of supporting local businesses. Hosted by Burnside Farms in VA, the event is one of the largest pick-your-own flower events in the world!

With more than five acres of spring flowers in bloom, the sweeps of resonant colors were breath taking! Burnside is a darling little seasonal farm that offers a selection of both "conventional" fruits, veggies and local organic offerings. Also available at the market place are jams, jellies, pickles, and other "canned" foods. However, what interested us was definitely the colorful blooms of daffodils and tulips that carpeted the fields.
You are aware of my fascination with tulips.....To see so many varieties of tulips on display was truly spectacular. The "Regular Tulips" (as I like to call them) were dressed in a consistent color and had a simple structure to them, while the Peony Tulips were grand in every sense of the word with multiple layers of petals. They also had the Lily Flowered Tulips that were getting ready to put on a show of their own in a day or two. My little guy wanted to be my helper and pick the flowers for me. So with our basket in hand and a quick read of “how to pick the tulips guidelines” we had our own little bouquet of flowers to bring home with us!
We spent a good two hours at this place! It was a welcoming change from the daily grind and the folks running the place made the experience an enjoyable one. They had a good system in place to keep the flow of traffic structured. The parking lot can get crowded on weekends I’m told but since we reached early on the scene, we did not have to deal with any such issues. It's a flower lover’s paradise and offers some wonderful opportunities to take some lovely family pictures. If you live in driving distance to this wonderful farm, make sure you don’t miss out on this opportunity! (Tip: Before you head out make sure you check their updates about the blooms on their Facebook page).
A look at the blooms that I brought home adding cheer to a corner of my living room......
Hope all that color helped to cope with the Monday morning blues! Have a fantastic week ahead:)

Happy Women's Day !

Happy Women's Day to all the women folk out there!!!
This picture is more than a bunch of  pretty tulips and the crackling fire - to me the tulips are symbolic of the gentle nature and breathtaking beauty of every woman and the fire is figuratively speaking her inner zeal, passion and emotional intensity with which she nurtures, protects, heals, loves and gives with all her heart. Know that you are strong, beautiful, intelligent, sexy, inspiring, invincible - or to put it simply "INCREDIBLE IN EVERY WAY" !

Color it Autumn

When the first leaves of Autumn break free and sway to the persuasive winds and the diligent little squirrels hoard their bounty of acorns that they've painstakingly rounded up, you know it's time to start tweaking the corner's of your home to be in sync with the changing season. Autumn's inviting palette with it's rich and comforting earth tones makes decorating for Autumn, a natural and easy task.
I've kept my base color of orange and brown in the sun room and have gone ahead and added hints of teal, lavender and mustard to alleviate what other wise might be a stodgy color scheme. The India Circus Peacock cushion in teal, is a go to favorite of mine and fits the color scheme I had in mind perfectly.
I harvested the last of my lavender flowers for the season. Using a copper watering can to house these beauties, it ties in perfectly with the other accents in the room. My copper watering can was a Target find (last summer from the clearance section). Priced at $6, it was in my shopping cart without a second thought. (Tip: End of the season sales and a keen eye can result in some great deals.) This watering can seems to be popular and I spotted it in the September  2014 issue of the Matchbook Magazine "Get the Look" section !!!

As pools of sunlight warm the space and gradually release the restorative aroma from the lavender, I'm consumed by the beauty that nature so abundantly showers on us. To experience and connect with it, is nothing short of a blessing.......

Have a wonderful day !!!

Turning Up the Color Outdoors

Gardening to me is way to collaborate with "Nature". I'm usually the kind of person who likes to be in control of everything (well almost everything..;). But ever since I began gardening, I've come to realize of who's actually in-charge and who get's to control, direct and take the lead when it comes to the landscape outside. The duration of each plant's lifespan is under the direction of Mother Nature. And that's what makes gardening such a joy is to be able to partner with such an influential force and turn the outdoor canvas into a collaborative work of art.
Here in Virginia, gardening is not an easy task. The seasons take a toll on the gardens and there's a lot of damage control to be done after winter. This year though we did a little planning ahead of time and planted bulbs belonging to the "Blazing Star", Dahlias and Tulips family to amplify the color quotient of the pathway to my door. These plants not only add an exotic feel to the area but also help to paint large sections with bold strokes of color.
I've landscaped every inch of soil at my disposal and I know I've done it right, when I see the bees and butterflies partying hard in my garden. Here are a few closeups of the exquisite beauties from my garden.........

I like treating my outdoor spaces as an extension of my indoors. Materializing that thought process, I've also managed to create a little private oasis for my family by incorporating weather resistant furniture, potted plants in colorful containers, and beautiful garden accessorizes. By drawing inspiration from the colors used in my sunroom and favoring deep hues ranging from reds, oranges to pinks, the space flows effortlessly once the doors are thrown open for entertaining.

The outdoor walls do not give me the liberty to hang shelves to display plants. However, my end of the season bargain hunts were fruitful and I landed myself these wrought iron plant display stands that give me the room to add layers of interest at different levels.

Colorful watering cans are not only functional but also add a dash of color and can be used as a garden/outdoor accessory too.

I hope you enjoyed the snapshots of my garden tour and I do wish you find your outdoor calling and enjoy every facet of gardening be it the anticipation of a new leaf, bud or flower, the mystery of not knowing how the season is going to contour the garden, the sense of contentment when things go as planned, or the angst of watching a loving plant struggling to thrive.........

You'll take care and do drop me a line as I love hearing from you'll. As for now, I'm going to pack my bags for a weekend trip to New York, so miss me while I'm gone.......see you'll back here next week :)

A Zest of Orange to your Decor

If you scrutinize the colors that I've used in my home, you'll be able to tell that I usually have a red or orange undertone to my decor. Apart from the eclectic theme that pulls the rooms together, it is also the color that helps to transition from one room to another without creating an island effect. Orange said to be a secondary color, is the primary accent color for my home. I personally feel it strikes the perfect balance between elegance and passion..........
While we were deciding on the color palette for our master bedroom, (I must confess) we had our fair share of arguments and reservations about what color would go up on the walls. But it became very evident in a conversation (that my husband and I were engaged in), that the room we drift towards when we felt happy or went to when we wanted consolation was our sunroom. It's the bold punches of orange in this room that injects the drama and fun to this space and draws us in every single time.
Orange a more restrained version of red, to me it's swanky, vitalizing and triggers my creativity. Also considered the color of lady luck, I'm encouraged to use it in more ways than one;) Since the tonal quality of this room works for my husband and I, we took it a notch up and used it in our master bedroom too. And if you think blues and greys are "THE" colors for a master bedroom well I have news for you. Research suggests that orange induces positive thoughts and hence is the perfect precursor to a restful night’s sleep!!!

So the next time you are faced with the dilemma of making a color choice for a room, don't get overwhelmed. Instead, think of the room that you tend to gravitate towards when your feeling happy or run to when the blues kick in. There likes in your cue to solve the color mystery in the most uncomplicated way !!!

Have an awesome weekend!!!

With a Spring in my Step

Hello Folks !!!

Last week and the weekend have both been hectic. But it has been an exciting one. Last Wednesday, I woke up to my blog adda featured on IKEA FAMILY LIVE FACEBOOK !!! My head's still reeling with excitement:) If you haven't had a chance  to check it out, click here.

With family visiting us from India, I do have my hands full entertaining them. But what's nice is, I'm being pampered in return and treated to some wonderful home made Indian delicacies......will be sharing some recipes very soon. As for my bit to entertainment them, the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC was on the top of my list. Yesterday we had a chance to drive down to DC to see the blooms. With a soft corner for these flowers..........It was a treat for the eyes. It's their simplicity that draws me in every single time. And I must say, I've hit it big with three cherry blossom trees right outside my sunroom window!!!
My fixation does not end with just admiring them.........I had to have a touch of the Cherry Blossom to my decor at home. So I paired a small branch of the delicate cherry blossoms with my Buddha from Nepal. Also adding to the zen vignette  is the wooden box another find from Nepal

The wooden box symbolizes the pyramid adorning the Boudhanath Stupa in Nepal. Declared as the Heritage sight by UNESCO, the Bodhnath Stupa is a must see. Monopolizing the skyline, the unique architecture is said to have been built in the 14th century. The original pyramid like architecture has 13 steps, representing the ladder to enlightenment and the triangular shape depicts the abstract form of fire.
Love how the white of the cherry blossoms and the gold of the Buddha pops against the black and brown base color.

And finally rounding up the post for today with a close up shot of the most awaited flower of the season here in DC.........the cherry blossom!!!
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead and stay tuned for more exciting news and posts coming up this week !!!!

Grow Your Blog Party 2014

Before we move onto today's post, make sure you make yourself a cuppa and get comfortable .........Today, I'm joining the "Grow Your Blog Party " hosted by Vicki of 2 Bags Full. It's an opportunity to meet hundreds of bloggers from across the globe. So as I introduce my blog and myself, this is your chance to get to know us better.
Take a seat and get to know us - my blog and me
But before I go on to tell you'll what drove me to start my blog, I'd like to explain how I zeroed in on the name - "The East Coast Desi"(TECD). Since I live in Virginia (USA), the East Coast  part of it is quite self explanatory. As for "Desi" it's a term used to describe a person of Indian descent who lives abroad. But more than that I've used the word to describe my love for all things Indian.

While growing up, my home back in India was infused with traditional ethnic Indian charm. This aspect has had a strong influence on my design style. With my move to the US, I longed to create a balanced decor style that would reflect my Indian roots and the global influences we had come to absorb through our experiences from living abroad.Trying to recreate that for ourselves (that's my husband, 6 year old son and me) was not an easy task. But the end result has been exactly what we wanted.

We started off with the bare bones of a house and I believe that with good design we've been able to breathe life into it. And adding the soul, is my family along with those few personal statement pieces. And by key personal statement pieces I mean : heirloom pieces, decor that talks about stories of where we're from and where we've been, all while screaming our personal style.

Every friend, family or acquaintance that has come through the doors of the TECD casa, has wanted to patiently absorb all the stories that the home has ever wanted to share ..........and as they wanted to know more about where I sourced my pieces from and requested that I help them design their spaces too, I realized people were looking for inspiration to decorate their space in a globally chic style and I could share what I knew.

Then one summer morning, a little vignette I created by gathering a few sprays of wild Chicory flowers, made me attain decorating Nirvana (if you may term it that way). There was something about the image that I had captured on my camera that wanted me to share it.....and so TECD was born. I was able to recognize that blogging was a great way to combine the two things I love doing : decorating + photography.
This was the image that made me take that big leap into the blogging world.

And now there is no looking back.........I enjoy the sense of control that my blog gives me. I'm the stylist, photographer, writer, editor.....you name it. It propels me to live my creative best. It has been a link in connecting me with so many wonderful and talented people, be it the artists I feature or my blogger buddies. Not to mention the heart-beat of my blog - my READERS . This seems to be the platform to share common interests primarily relating to global decor. Its a place to inspire and be inspired........I've enjoyed the journey so far and if I'm able to motivate even a handful of people or virtually assist them in creating a place called home.......then all the sleepless hours spent in writing the posts or days when I skip my lunch to shoot pictures (cause the lighting was just right), is well worth the effort...................

Hope to see you'll around as I whip up more posts in the days to come and share the plethora of inspiration around us that is waiting to be explored.

These are a few of my Favorite Things !!!

Hello and welcome back!!!!
Have you'll recovered from the holi-daze???? I haven't. I've just about managed to put away the Christmas decorations and am trying really hard to get back to the daily routine.........
As for the weather, it's temperatures in the negatives and more snow! Looking on the bright side though, every season has it's share of wonderful moments.......For me I enjoy the feel of Pashmina and Cashmere against my skin, little toes sticking close to me trying to keep warm, the fact that I can indulge in a guiltless third cup of tea in the day (I've got the cold to blame;), the hypnotic effect of the dancing flames from a fireplace,  an excuse to play engaging board games, devouring baked goodies while still hot, making snow angels with my little one and the picturesque wintry scene following a snow shower...... However, the only thing I detest about living in places that have extreme cold weather is the interim cessation of outdoor activities. With having to spend extended periods of time indoors, what does one do to create a warm cocoon to elude the somber grey winter skies???
(Tip: For a tea lover, nothing like a monogrammed mug to enjoy the cup of goodness. This one was gifted to me by my husband. If you want your very own mugs, Pottery Barn is your stop. With the prices slashed for the after season sale the timing couldn't be better !)

How does a glowing fire, snuggling up with your little one, a cup of hot tea, left over Christmas cookies and a good puzzle sound????
Well, we did just that. As my son picked out a puzzle to keep us occupied for the afternoon, I made the room nice and toasty by starting the fire. We brought out some leftover Christmas goodies and a nice cup of tea (for me).
(Tip: Paperwhite Narcissus are wonderful plants to brings indoors during the winter months.Belonging to the Daffodil family, the fragrance from these blooms is sure to make you giddy.)
As I looked up sipping from my tea, the Paperwhite Narcissus looked breathtaking against the dancing flames in the background. I could not help but run upstairs to get my camera and take a couple of shots. While my little guy whined about mommy abandoning him half way through the puzzle, I managed to sneak in a few clicks to share with you'll and quickly got back to the serious business with my son.

The puzzle took us a good hour and a half. As I reminded him and myself that we had homework to complete, I must admit, I wanted to sit there a little longer........

Tea and Flowers Make Everything Better

Good Morning Wednesday!!!!

I'm sure, the first thing you noticed in the above picture are the gorgeous Dahlias. Their color and symmetry was something I was drawn to the minute I set  my eyes on them. I was at Vijaya's place to design her daughter's bedroom when these beauties happened to get my attention.
As pretty as the Dahlias looked in the garden, Vijaya was certain that they had been there a while and was kind enough to send me home with a few stalks. She had me believe that by clicking some pics of the Dahlias for her and my blog, these pristine blooms would last a lifetime in the cyber world:)
So when I came home, I brought out the vintage beer mug and placed the flowers randomly into the container. I let them drop as naturally as they did, when they were in the plant. Magenta said to be the color of the non-conformist was already having it's effect on me. I wanted to break away from my afternoon routine and just relax with a cup of tea. The chilly weather called for a light throw. The Kantha sari duvet complemented the free spirited Magenta dahlias perfectly.
While the tea brewed, I quickly took a few shots  for Vijaya and my lovely readers.

As I tucked my feet into the folds of the duvet and sipped on my chai, the magnificent blooms kept me company. With their quintessential quality to feed the soul, the flowers worked their magic. They bring beauty to the increasing stressful pace of life. I felt completely relaxed and refreshed and ready to take on a 6 year old (with unmatched energy levels) when he gets back home from school:) Thank you Vijaya for the splendid blooms that set the ball rolling for a perfectly indulgent afternoon.

You'll have a wonderful day and don't forget to indulge in all that life has to offer!!!

Start of a new week!!!!!

Hello Monday !!!

It's been a busy week at my place getting things organised for the up coming Diwali celebrations. I've been preoccupied deciding the colors for the home this festive season, lighting ideas, tablescape for the Diwali night and the food menu. Not to mention the photo sessions, editing and the write ups for you'll in-between all this. I doubt if I'm going to pass the sleep test in the state of mind that I am !!!!
A bunch of Peruvian Lilies  instantly add color and life to a corner in my home. (Decor tip:Use a vase in a contrasting color to add drama to the setting. I've used a blue distressed pail from Target to house the pink lilies.)
However, I can assure you that the coming weeks are sure to be a treat for the eyes. I have some delightful Diwali inspiration heading your way. I have it all taken care of.......right from one-of-a-kind jewelry to get you looking gorgeous for the festive day, to simple home decor additions to your space that's going to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for family and friends. So giddy up and have a wonderful week!!!

The Season of Umbers, Coppers and Golds

SOME PEOPLE LOOK FOR A BEAUTIFUL PLACE, OTHERS MAKE A PLACE BEAUTIFUL”

                                    - HAZRAT INAYAT KHAN

This quote has stuck with me for a while now. And in an attempt to live by it, I try to style my home making it warm, beautiful and comfortable for my family and at the same time reflect our personalities and style sensibilities.

Let's take a look at the color combinations and a new addition adorning my Indian style room for the Fall.We know that fall has arrived when the mums begin to dot the neighborhood gardens, the stoles are pulled out from storage and a bed of leaves make a glorious carpet at every crossroad. Fall is the season that marks the start of a string of celebrations and festivities be it Diwali, Dussehra, Thanksgiving or Christmas. I love all of them and the spirit associated with these festivities. As the colors of fall begin to deepen, my place echoes these colors in the form of flowers, cushions, candles, throws or my love for tea cups. The atmosphere at home is intimate and welcoming with the aroma of cinnamon, freshly baked cakes, brownies, cookies and heart warming soups. It's also the season to put on those extra pounds as hot and deep fried foods and cold weather go hand in hand.

I'm a girl who loves color. The more color I have around me the happier I feel. It helps to lift my spirits up and keep them there. I brought out a throw in a rich pumpkin-cinnamon color that mom knitted herself years ago. It's more than 25 years old and when I wrap myself in it on nippy autumn evenings it comforts me in a way I need it most. If you have hand knitted pieces (shawls, stoles, etc.) made by mom or grand-mom, they are precious and I consider them heirloom treasures. It's a wonderful way to add a sentimental piece to your decor. It always brings back memories of mom as she deftly wrapped the wool around her fingers and wove magic creating exquisitely patterned shawls and more. Sometimes, she'd chide me as I'd be like a little kitten trying to entertain myself with her ball of wool making it into a huge knotty mess. Given an option I would rather surround myself with meaningful pieces and ones that tell a story or have traces of time on them rather than settling for a store bought piece.

The monk wooden figurine, is a unique one and I fell in love with it the moment I set my eyes on it. He was an addition made to the home years back. He's not from a distant exotic travel destination but from Marshalls. The yellow ocher color is just perfect and he blends in beautifully into the Fall inspired decor.

The Superpoms in bright red with the yellow center had my name written over them, so I brought them home from the grocery store to dress up my little Fall vignette. This time a copper kalash (container) serves as my vase. It's a reminder of the wonderful moment that we set foot into this home as we used it for the house warming ceremony puja.
Do drop me a line and let me know how you liked my Fall inspired vignette and the colors in warm hues. What colors are you'll gravitating towards this Fall?????

More Fall inspired decor coming up in the weeks to come. Check back on Wednesday for more on the "Featured Shop" Segment. Finally, signing off for today, and wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

Friday Bliss !!!!

Hello, It's Friday again!!!!

Another week has gone by.............the weekend comes along with the desire to spend time with loved ones, watch a Bollywood movie or catch up over coffee with a dear friend. But then who am I kidding, there's also the endless to-do list :( However, I do try to indulge in a few activities with the hope of re-charging my batteries for the next week and in the process cut myself loose from the mundane chores.
African Violets - the best $3 that I ever spent .
On a different note, a reader Vasuda Raman wrote to me saying that "she needed a dose of The East Coast Desi everyday, when she took a break with her cup of tea". It was the best positive affirmation I ever got as it made me realize that The East Coast Desi is being accepted as a part of people's daily lives. It's wonderful readers and friends like you who keep me going and are a catalyst in pushing my creative boundaries. I would like "The East Coast Desi " to be your muse when it comes to decor and lifestyle. I intend to make my blog a happy place to visit and see beautiful and inspiring images, that have a lingering effect on you..... leaving you a happier and inspired person. And along the way, if I meet like minded people, who are willing to share ideas and a flair for all things wonderful, nothing like it.

With that said, I have another week of wonderful and inspiring posts lined up for you'll. Make sure, to stop by  and get your daily dose of The East Coast Desi with me Sruthi, as I share snippets from my home and the inexhaustible inspiration around us.

Have a wonderful weekend and hugs to each and everyone of you who has made the effort to stop by and say wonderful things to make my day !!!!

Brighten Up My Day !!!!

Hello Everybody !!!!

It's been a dull and rainy day here in Virginia. I hate weather like this. On a rainy day I prefer to have lots of family and friends at home, lazying around and chit-chatting nonchalantly accompanied by cup after cup of ginger chai and hot pakoras ( fried chick pea fritters). Back in the good old days when it rained, mom always used to make pakoras with ginger chai. Thinking of it, gives me a warm feeling.

However, now no pakoras for me. I brighten up my day lighting candles and buying flowers for myself. Today, it was hydrangeas that I longed for. So when I went to the store for groceries, there they were calling out to me. I had to pick them up. They definitely made up for the gloomy weather and brought some color to the indoors.

I love Hydrangea cause you only need a couple of stems to fill a vase.

Love to watch the wax  as it melts and makes beautiful patterns as it drips down .

As you'll know, I adore kantha work. I've already featured a shop, Another World Trading that specializes in kantha products. So when I came across this Terai folding chair from Anthropologie on Craigslist, I could not pass it up. It is in mint condition. And I'm thrilled I got it. It originally costs $198 and I scored if for........ drum roll please.... $30. Now that's a sweet deal.

The chair fits beautifully in the guest bedroom and works as additional seating on days when we are entertaining. These chairs instantly add a global flair to any room. I'm constantly moving furniture around house, digging into my stash of accessories and making combination to see how it all comes together. So today, this was the look that I was going for.

Fresh flowers, a candle and a brass aarti diya makes the rule of three work like charm.

You'll have a wonderful weekend and stay tuned for more on décor, food and " if I could I would(featured shop)" sections coming up next week.
