Easy Breezy Coastal Style

Beach vacations don’t last forever, however you could bring the quintessential getaway vibe of coastal style right to your home with a few basic elements of coastal décor.
Let’s get started with the color palette. For a classic look, stick to the traditional nautical color palette of whites and aqua tones. But if you enjoy a more bold color scheme, tropical hues have so much to offer and explore. Try incorporating fun hues like the fuchsia of the Bougainvillea, the orange/red thrown in to mimic the fiery sunsets over the shimmering blues of the ocean or just follow the color trail that your heart leads you to......
Next, unify the coastal feel with textures. Weather-beaten/distressed wood or furniture and rugs made of natural fibers such as sisal, sea grass, rattan and bamboo are popular choices. Furniture with painted patina is also a great choice and a fun way to spruce up an old furniture piece with a lick of paint. For accessories display your beach combing trophies such as shells, drift wood collections and other elements from the beachy surroundings  with pride.
And finally don’t forget to add your personal stamp to it all. I brought in some beach style to my sunroom with a few simple finds. A DIY stenciled pillow, grocery store bought lantern (always keep those eyes open) and other knick-knacks celebrate style where you can kick off your shoes and feel completely at ease……..
Enjoy the rest of your week and happy decorating!

Happy Second Birthday TECD!

Happy Second Birthday TECD! Yes, it’s been two whole years since I first started this blog! Seriously someone tell me,where does time fly?
But I must say that my blog, “The East Coast Desi” has come to be more than my creative springboard. It has been the most liberating experience for my artistic soul. The emotion of creating something gives me a high and all aspects of blogging lead to this very road! Styling, writing, photographing, sharing, meeting and interacting with like-minded, inspirational and creative folks and making special bonds with some of them, has been the most nourishing experience to say the least. But the highlight has to be my wonderful set of readers who reinforce, inspire and encourage me to put my creative best forward. Thank you fabulous people, for all the love and reassurance. Truly without YOU, TECD would not be what it is!

I thought I'd make this wonderful milestone even more memorable by sharing some very exciting news with you’ll. My family and I recently took the big decision to move into another home. It is a very demanding decision that requires my undivided time and energy and that would explain my mini-hiatus from the blogging scene......The new home is being built from scratch which means we've been busy going through numerous design plans and trying to make sense of the fragmented pieces to complete the giant design jigsaw puzzle. It is not an easy task but it has been an exhilarating one. The actual move will be taking place later this year but until then we have our hands full preparing for the move and the new home. However, the most wonderful outcome of this decision of ours is that we get to design and decorate our dream home! We as a family are truly excited and I would love for you to join us on our design journey.

With that, I bid you adieu for now......Since summer is here and I am enjoying it while it lasts, expect the posts to trickle in from time to time but rest assured, I’m here to stay in the blogosphere!

You take care and enjoy the rest of your week!

Eat-in Central! (My Kitchen tour)

The definition of the word "kitchen" has evolved with the modern day needs and lifestyle. It has matured into a versatile space that functions as the epi-center of the family’s activities. It’s not only a place where family and friends gather to cook, share, connect and eat but also serves as a mirror, reflecting how families live today.
Day’s activities are planned here, bills get paid, homework gets done, playtime and crafting happens here and happy delicious memories get created along with a big batch of fresh chocolate-chip cookies. My kitchen is no different! It is constantly bustling with activity and works hard to nourish my family's mind, body and soul.
While looking to buy a new home, one of the requirements on our list of must-haves was an open floor plan kitchen with an abundance of sunlight flooding the space. We loved the fact that this kitchen had all this and more. It was beautifully integrated with the sunroom and the informal dining. An advantage when your entertaining and need to keep a watchful eye on the playful eight-year- old mischief-maker.
Informal dining room

Sunroom
Since the building was in its nascent stage, we were lucky enough to work with the builder and get exactly what we wanted. And that means we got to choose the options such as the cabinets, counter tops, appliance and flooring. We kept things simple and went for warm wood tones, dark granite for the counter-tops and a light colored back splash to brighten things up. When it came to the decision about floors, we finalized on hard wood floors for visual continuity and to keep things cohesive with the rest of the space. Boy am I glad! Firstly, it is great in winter as it’s not as cold on the feet as the tile floors. Second, it adds an instant factor of warmth and looks great!
We made sure of the fact that the areas for prepping, cooking, cleanup as well as storage flowed gracefully from one to the other i.e. keeping in sync with the "work triangle" rule. The island being the visual centerpiece, double duty’s as my prep surface, on-the-go breakfast stop and a welcoming perch for family and friends with the addition of the vintage style metal bar stools.
With the basics in place, we then tackled the fun part - accessorizing the kitchen. As fun as it is I personally think that decorating a kitchen is one of the most difficult tasks. I first started with narrowing down on the colors to use in the space. Since it is an open floor plan, we had to pick our color cues from the sunroom and informal dining space. That way, color is the unifying factor that seamlessly blends the different zones. Shades of orange, green and a touch of teal make their presence felt in the kitchen.

Sharing a few tips and tricks that I used for accessorizing my kitchen:
  • Display a few favorite pieces from your collection of colorful tea cups, crockery and cookware.
  • A touch of whimsy is never out of place like the teapot shaped chalk board. I love writing happy messages on it or for letting my hubby know what teabags we have in stock:)

  • Put your favorite cook books out where you can see them. When in doubt what to serve for dinner next time, you know help is within arms reach.
  • Colorful Indian spice boxes are not only functional but also help bring in color and pattern to the kitchen decor.

  • Flowers and potted herbs/plants help bring the place alive.
  • Use nature’s bounty such as seasonal fruits and vegetables to your advantage.
  • Floor Runners that echo the color scheme can not only add texture but have the added benefit of swapping them out often as per seasons or moods and creating a whole new look every single time.
  • Bring in inexpensive artwork like this "Put the Kettle On" print that I scored at a yard sale.
  • Use bright and cheerful kitchen/dish towels (Drying off dishes is a task that cannot be avoided, so why not do it in style?).
  • Make creative use of patterns to add an element of visual appeal - shop for teacups, tea storage containers, spice boxes etc that mimic the color scheme of your kitchen with interesting pattern-play on them.
  • DIY skills can also come to your rescue. For instance, take the ceramic containers with a few indoor plants adorning my window sill. Simple Oradd ceramic plant pots from IKEA, were jazzed up with some chevron patterned scrap booking paper and modge-podge to match the chevron pattern on my rug.
Another important factor to make your kitchen work efficiently is "Organisation". It is imperative that you have all your things organized. Here is a peek into my not so large pantry. However, I make it work as I have everything that I need labelled and use color coded storage containers and baskets to help me stay on track.
Finally, I can safely claim that I’ve tackled the three main elements of kitchen design being function, efficiency and style with panache. I'd love to hear what you have to say, so don't forget to drop me a line....

You have a great day and stay inspired!

My Portable Indoor Garden Oasis......

Spring break is here and I have the company of my little brat for a whole week! We have charted out a plan of action to keep him busy and I intend to stick to it without a doubt. It is still cold in my part of the world so much of the activity is restricted to indoors......
While I wait for spring to arrive and for the weather to get a bit warmer, I decided to bring a bit of the outdoors in:) An antique brass puja basket, traditionally used to hold flowers to take to the temple is filled with a few indoor plants. My stone Ganesha is placed in the center to give it an interesting focal point. And Voila ! My own transportable garden oasis is done! I love using my vintage brass collection in unexpected ways..........I love how this turned out, don't you?
Wishing you a wonderful and productive week ahead!

My Evolving Home!

Recently, I came across a quote that said, "You have decor OCD if.......your house is a constant work in progress". My home "IS" a constant work in progress and I’m not shy to admit the fact. But to term it as OCD would be an exaggeration. I’d like to use the phrase “a progressive approach” instead, what say? Today, let's take a walk down memory lane and see how my home and decor style have evolved with time.

The different phases in our lives has impacted the kind of homes that my family and I have lived in and the decor style that we have adopted to suit our lifestyles in each phase. We have gone from pegging our style as ethnic Indian, eclectic modern to global eclectic. My husband and I set up our "first home" together in Bangalore (India). The excitement and anticipation of  building our new home together was indescribable. Little by little, bit by bit we started putting the pieces together like a jig saw puzzle to create a home that would reflect "us"! My husband and I are both born and brought up in South India and adore the arts and crafts of India, so it was but natural that we were drawn to ethnic Indian decor. Wooden carvings, Tanjore paintings (from our travels), brass artifacts (our own finds as well as those inherited from our families) and colorful Indian textiles came together to create a space that exuded authenticity and was a creative fusion of our heritage. However, within a year of setting up this place, we had to uproot and move thousands of miles away, with job opportunities taking us overseas (USA).
(A peek at a few corner's of our very first home in Bangalore (India - 2003). These pics were taken 8 months after we had moved into this home! (I scanned hard copies of the pictures I had and hence please forgive the quality of the images.))
In a new country (USA), we were excited about the opportunities that lay ahead of us. As a working couple, "condo style living" located in the heart of down town, was ideal for us. We'd finish work and most evenings were spent exploring the new place or indulging in one of the many restaurants that lined the down town patch. Like most first timers who come to this country and end up at IKEA to shop for furniture, we were no exception. The modern, affordable furniture from IKEA seemed ideal as we were unsure  of how things would play off with time and if we had to move back to India, it would not be a big deal to get rid of the furniture. But living in a home without personality was not for us. Discovering new decor stores and lifestyle brands on weekends, we found pieces that we had fallen head over heels in love with and brought them home. Within no time, we saw a theme evolve organically - we realised we had a collection of Oriental themed decor and decided on an eclectic modern Zen vibe for the space.
(Our condo - Functional pieces, nutty colors and Asian decor accents, create a relaxed eclectic modern living space (2009))
Next came "the home for the baby" phase. We had kept the decor minimal knowing fully well that we were ready and wanted to start a family soon. So when the happy day came, it was easy to store away all the breakable decor and other things that could be a potential hazard for the baby. We child-proofed the space and made room for the baby's crib, play pen and all.....With  a baby in the house, toys started to take over the place in no time. We focused on finding creative ways to store my son's toys in an attempt to make the place look a little less like the "Target" toy section:)

Once the baby phase was over and our little fella had stabilized on his feet and had found ways to entertain himself with his toys and not our decor accessories, we started bringing out the stuff that we had stored away one at a time. With a firm "NO", we were able to get our little guy to understand that it was NOT OK to play with our stuff:) And finally we decided, it was about time to settle down in a place we can call our own and plunged into buying "our forever home".
This is our current home:) A collection of 15 years - things that we absolutely love and truly adore ! A style that is globally eclectic with a strong Indian undertone to it.
It’s been 4 years since we moved into our existing home. The one thing that my husband and I were sure of while decorating this space was adopting an adventurous style. A style that would blend our Indian roots, travel finds and our personalities as a family. The first and foremost thing we ensured was to have our collections from India brought here. Then we scouted around for the perfect new furniture that met the functionality and style attributes. Next we combined new with the old - this was our biggest challenge! Every weekend, we’d try and move things around until every piece had its place of importance and worked harmoniously in the space. We totally love how everything came together:)

With our son all grown up and 8 years old now, my husband and I have had a little more time to spare and focus on developing our hobbies and interests, this past year. We have successfully integrated the requirements for these into our existing design layout:
My blog adda and studio! Having a dedicated work space to blog and paint, helps me focus on my task at hand and not loose momentum.

We incorporated a pool table in our basement for my husband! We as a family seem to enjoy this on game nights. Being an indoor sport it comes to our rescue in the cold winter months when its frightfully cold outside and all outdoor activities come to a stand still:)
As time goes by, I know we will have to deal with the other phases - be it the empty nest syndrome or maybe down sizing to a retirement home where all the rooms are on the same floor ( I know my knees will thank me)!

My family and I,  have "LEARNT " from experiencing life, "EVOLVED" and "GROWN"..... and so has our home. And this is how it should, as we strongly believe that our home is truly an extension of us......We love our home and look forward to coming back to it every evening. The process of rotating things from storage to keep things looking fresh,  adding a seasonal twist to the ambiance or discovering a new piece to add to the family's collection is something that we enjoy thoroughly and will continue to do so......

I'd love to hear about your home decorating experiences and what you have to say about a home being an evolving space. So don't forget to drop me a line here or on my FB page.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!

Color it Autumn

When the first leaves of Autumn break free and sway to the persuasive winds and the diligent little squirrels hoard their bounty of acorns that they've painstakingly rounded up, you know it's time to start tweaking the corner's of your home to be in sync with the changing season. Autumn's inviting palette with it's rich and comforting earth tones makes decorating for Autumn, a natural and easy task.
I've kept my base color of orange and brown in the sun room and have gone ahead and added hints of teal, lavender and mustard to alleviate what other wise might be a stodgy color scheme. The India Circus Peacock cushion in teal, is a go to favorite of mine and fits the color scheme I had in mind perfectly.
I harvested the last of my lavender flowers for the season. Using a copper watering can to house these beauties, it ties in perfectly with the other accents in the room. My copper watering can was a Target find (last summer from the clearance section). Priced at $6, it was in my shopping cart without a second thought. (Tip: End of the season sales and a keen eye can result in some great deals.) This watering can seems to be popular and I spotted it in the September  2014 issue of the Matchbook Magazine "Get the Look" section !!!

As pools of sunlight warm the space and gradually release the restorative aroma from the lavender, I'm consumed by the beauty that nature so abundantly showers on us. To experience and connect with it, is nothing short of a blessing.......

Have a wonderful day !!!

Curated Home Vs Decorated Home

There's always that one compliment that you receive for the effort that you put into shaping and creating your home, that makes you want to pat yourself on the back and say, I did it right !!! For me the golden words were," You have a beautifully CURATED home !!! "
Personally, living in a consciously curated home means a lot to me than existing in a beautifully decorated home. A beautifully decorated home is something that you can find as you turn the pages of a home furnishings catalog. But a "curated home" to me is a thoughtfully put together collection that has a soul and it speaks volumes of your personality, design aesthetics, cultural influences and serves as a visual journal of your memories, experiences and travel tales.
A home serves as the powerhouse for everyday inspiration,  so arise the curator in you and let the decorator take a back seat as you prudently surround yourself with the objects of your affection. Take the time to find pieces for your home that trigger an emotion or a reaction from you and the rest will follow suit.
What would you rather have, a beautifully decorated home or a thoughtfully curated home ??? I'd love to hear from you.

Happy curating folks !!!

Make those books Multi-task for you !!!

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”
                                                                                ― Cicero

Nostalgia grips me every now and then........as I ruminate over the past and make my way down memory lane, more often than not, my cherished memories are the ones that I spent with my maternal grandparents. Their home was our all time favorite getaway. Come summer holidays and we'd be off to see them........On one such visit, I remember my grandfather (nana, a voracious reader himself) sat me down and explained to me that books are the best friend that anyone could ask for. He said they influence how you think and what you make of yourself. So it's always nice to keep a good set of loyal friends (books) close at hand. His favorite reads were inspirational biographies and he'd suggest a number of them to me. They have impacted me on different levels and more so now since I'm a mom. I so want to give it all back to my son and want him to be surrounded by thoughts that are positive, inspirational and that would help him develop into a strong individual..........I tell my son that it is essential to visit the library, as it's just like going grocery shopping but the only difference being you are shopping for food for your brain and thoughts:)
For a fun twist, create a sculptural pedestal atop a basket with your favorite books.
As I was growing up, I always had a good book on my night stand. But now they make their presence felt in almost every room of my home. Scattered around the sunroom, family room and the bedroom they work great as a mood up lifter, a source that provides copious amounts of inspiration when one is running low on the creative spunk or to just disentangle from the daily grind with a good cuppa.

They even work great as a personal decor accessory??? Haven't thought of that, then read on......If your looking to add a layer to your home that reflects your personality and interests, then books can do that for you in an instant. Books are personal, they give an insight into the reader's personality and mirrors his or her interests. Personally , I feel that a home without  books brings with it a feeling of deprivation.

Layering books into the decor adds warmth and personality. I have books in baskets, on the coffee table or stacked on the side of a couch multi-tasking as an instant side table. I've rounded up a few corners from my home showcasing how you could make those books you have, multi-task for you as a wonderful decor accessory:
Stack your books to form the base/legs and place a wooden plank for a sketchy version of a console.
Pile on your favorite books on the side of a couch /chair to form an instant side table. To give it a little more definition, place a tray to function as the top of the table. A plant and some cherished treasures and you'll all done.
While creating a vignette, if you need to varying the height of the accessories that make up the composition, create a pedestal with a set of books. Varying the height draws the eye to different levels keeping things interesting.
I hope today's post was resourceful and inspired you to pull those books off the shelves and put them to use as a personal decor accessory!!! And don't forget to drop me a line if you have any ingenious ways of incorporating books into your decor:)

Have a wonderful day!!!!

TECD has been featured on "THE CURATED MAGAZINE"

ELATED............OVERJOYED............ECSTATIC...............AND COMPLETELY OVER THE MOON !!!!

Why this reaction???? Cause "THE EAST COAST DESI" has been featured on " THE CURATED MAGAZINE", April 2014 issue !!!
We've known Priya to bring the most beautiful images and  bohemian Chic inspiration to us through her blogging adventures at "Once Upon a Tea Time". But what some of you'll may not be familiar with is that she is also the chief curator of the new digital magazine "Curated". A monthly publication that makes for a captivating read and leaves you begging for more!!! With a strong mission statement, CURATED sure lives up to it's promise - "Our mission is to delight, engage and inform you and in addition to bringing you a visually stunning and engrossing read, we want to serve as a platform for inspiration by showcasing individuals who are powerhouses of positivity and creativity. We want to help tap into that well of potential that is within each one of us and bring out the very best."

Having read the first 3 issues of "The Curated Magazine" I was completely hooked. When Priya made a call on her blog for the home tours segment for her magazine, I wrote to her with the offer to tour the TECD casa. A couple of emails later, the outcome is finally here to share with you'll.
The entire process of shooting the TECD casa for Curated has been an unforgettable experience for me! I've had so much fun putting this together. Playing decor stylist is something I revel in and Curated let me do just that to my heart's content. I've become quite an acrobat I should say, climbing on chairs and anything else that I could find to get the angles right;)

Here are a few sneak peek's of what's instore for you.......

The issue also features Bhavana Bhatnagar of "An Indian Summer", Deb Trombley of "India pied-a-terre", Ami Gandhi (Executive Director of the South Asian American Policy and Research Institute), loads of beautiful images and inspirational quotes.Want to see more, click right here

Happy Ugadi

A very "Happy Ugadi" to my readers celebrating this wonderful South Indian festival. It signifies the celebration of the first day of the new year and is also considered the harbinger of "Spring". Hailing from South India, this was one of the most anticipated festivals celebrated back home. The Highlight of the festival for me was feasting on mom's homemade delicacies such as Holige/Obbattu, Bele vadas and the Ugadi Pachadi..........I tried my hand at the Holige and it resulted in a disaster:( So I decided to celebrate it my way, by lighting lamps and decorating my home with traditional flower arrangements and served a South Indian Thali (minus the Holige). However, I wish you luck with your festive gastronomic experiments in the kitchen !!!
Come Wednesday and I'm going to have a full house.........I have family visiting me from India for a month. That means I'm not going to be able to devote as much time as I'd like, to my blog. But not to worry, I did plan a little in advance and have some delightful posts lined up for you'll, all through the month of April. Curious ??? Well, I have a home tour, a feature on a talented new blogger friend and postcards from my home, and ....... uh no !!! I can't spill the beans on this one yet. A little patience lovely readers, you'll will not be disappointed.

One other thing that I'm super excited about is, that my husband's coming back home after his 3 weeks trip to India. The little guy and me have missed him terribly. He's lugging back some new loot that my wonderful parents have sent for me!

While I'm going to be busy with my house guests and my new loot, you take care  have a wonderful week !

My Blogging Headquarters/Adda (Home Office Reveal)

Imagine sharing your work space with a 7 year old........you get the idea, right??? That's one of the main reasons why our master bedroom redecorating project has been stalled to prioritize our home office makeover. But I must tell you that this makeover has been a fun family project. Even my 7 year old has pitched in to complete this space. As a result of which he claims this space belongs to him now.......so we are back to square one.

I'm going to let the space wars sought themselves out, but for now, I'm going to walk you through the thought process that went into creating our home office space aka my blogging headquarters/adda. We started off by looking for a large sturdy work table to house our desktop and much needed office supplies. We try to run things on a more or less paperless system where ever we can. That meant filing was not a big issue to deal with. After scouting around for the desk, we zeroed in on the Linnmon workstation from IKEA. A quick trip to IKEA and we came back with the desk, desk lamp, RIBBA frames and matting (imagine matting for $0.99 each). I love IKEA !!!

Next came the paint color. We went bold this time around. Our workstation is an extension of our bedroom so we wanted a look that was cohesive with the rest of the space. To contrast the Amber Wave (Sherwin William) in the bedroom, we headed in the direction of Relentless Olive (Sherwin William). And what's not to love about green.......said to have positive connotations and referred to as the color of rebirth and energy, we knew it would come to our rescue in the cold winter months, when the outsides are sporting nothing but a dry monochromatic landscape.
As the paint took its time to cure, we got cracking on the "Inspiration Wall" (as we like to call it). The the purpose of this wall is to provide visual stimulation. By marrying original artwork, color, inspirational quotes and other prized possessions such as favorite photographs and travel memorabilia, we were able to achieve the look we wanted. The credit for the original artwork has to be given to my son. He was experimenting with my photographs on the Waterlogue App, and the images he was churning out looked absolutely beautiful. On the spur of the moment I decided these would look perfect in my blog adda. Voila! With a printer at my disposal, I had original art in no time.

Since I wanted an eclectic vibe to the space, I went with the idea of adding a shadow box, a Sri Lankan mask and a paper mache alphabet "G" to personalize the space. The shadow box is filled with my favorite pictures, my son's artwork and my grandmother's silver key bunch. Making the most of the shadow box frame, I used it as a mini ledge to display small brass nick-knacks. Our favorite family inspirational quote (the one you see here) was created using PicMonkey. It's another great way to add inexpensive customized artwork to your walls.

Once the inspiration wall was dealt with, it was time to accessorize. Instead of buying the conventional office organizers, I shopped around the house and found containers that I could put hard at work to organize my office clutter.
Knowing me, a touch of green was a must. Low maintenance plants like the money plant and succulents are perfect for an office space. In colorful ceramic containers, they add an organic element to the space.
Task lighting came next. The table is set up by a large window that back up into a tree save line. So there's plenty of light flooding the space during the day. However, we added the IKEA Tertial lamp to throw light on the task at hand once the sun goes down. (Another important aspect that should be considered while adding lighting to a work space that is a part of the bedroom is, that the lighting does not hinder your partner's sleep in the room. Care should be taken to choose a light that would illuminate only the required work area.)
And finally, we placed the Anthropologie Terai chair (I found mine on Craigslist) and a love seat from World Market that was perfect for this space. A couple more embellishments in place and we were all done.

We love how this space turned out. I now spend long hours here studying, working on assignments, paying bills, painting, editing photographs, day dreaming and blogging. All you need is a little imagination and a comprehensive list of what the space needs to function as. The rest will fall in place......... well not really, I'm yet to deal with the 7 year old usurper ;)

Hope you enjoyed the tour of my home office and found inspiration to create your own.

Have a fabulous day !!!
